POSITION DESCRIPTION
- Position Title: Life Skills Paraprofessional
- School Department: Designated School
- Supervisor: Principal and Assistant Principal
- Terms of Employment: Per Classified Conditions of Employment
Primary Function:
To assist teachers and students with learning activities aligned with the Corporation’s educational programming to continuously develop students’ knowledge and skills so that they are prepared to pursue college and/or career opportunities.
Essential Duties:
- Recognize the basic dignities of students, parents and families, colleagues, and subordinates.
- Exercise due care to protect the mental and physical safety of students.
- Supervise students during transitions, recesses, lunches, and other times as directed.
- Assist special education teachers in providing services to meet students’ academic needs.
- Assist students with personal hygiene needs, including toileting and diaper changes.
- Lift and transfer students with mobility needs.
- Feed students who receive nutrition through a feeding tube.
- Supplement teacher instruction to support student learning.
- Perform non-instructional duties to support the implementation of special education services.
- Initiate and maintain collaborative relationships with students’ parents and families.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications and Characteristics:
- A high school diploma or an equivalent
- A positive, student-centered, and solution-focused attitude towards education and students
- The ability to establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with others
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Punctuality and regular attendance
- Respect for supervisors
- The ability to work with diverse groups of students
- The ability to enforce corporation and school rules and policies
- The ability to adhere to strict confidentiality policies
- The ability to use various computer and technology resources
- A past record clear of criminal activity and child abuse or neglect
Working Conditions:
span class="Apple-converted-space"> Persons are required to support students’ functional skills and will sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distant vision, and depth perception. Noise levels in the working environments may be moderately loud or loud. Occasionally, persons are required to work outdoors in varied weather conditions. Persons are also required to maintain emotional composure under stress.
